Clifton's Cafeteria

After watching a Huell Howser episode on Clifton's Cafeteria, we decided it would be fun to take our 5-year-old daughter downtown to see this 1930's restaurant complete with waterfalls, babbling brook, a chapel and rustic scenic decorations.

Clifton's, located at 648 S. Broadway in downtown Los Angeles, is in a funky, seedy area at best. This is the old theater district with many historic buildings in need of restoration. Being adventurous types, we weren't deterred. We went on a Sunday and found easy and cheap parking across the street in the old Bullocks building.

(Clifton's is only 2 blocks from Pershing Square so you can also take the metro.)

Entering Clifton's gives you a sense of a by gone era. Funky and woodsy décor with Sierra woodlands stand out as the central theme. A waterfall starts on the second floor, flows into a brook that ends in a small pond on the first floor. You'll find a cabin with chickens on the roof… faux woodland creatures in every corner, paintings of trees are on the walls creating a sort of a Disney look but much more funky. Our daughter loved it!

As we went through the line I noticed the tremendous selection of food. Roasted turkey (every day), macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, pork chops, roast beef, a terrific array of vegetables, salads and deserts galore. Yep, this is old-fashioned American food. Terribly nostalgic!

I got a large fruit salad for $2.39 and our daughter got a children's plate complete with fried chicken leg and thigh, rice, vegetable, desert and a drink for $3.99. My husband got the roasted lamb shank with roasted potatoes and vegetables for $5.39.

The service was efficient and cheerful. We even had someone help us to our table up on the 3rd floor.

We didn't expect the food to be good, but it was, in fact it was delicious! Everything from the chicken to the chocolate pudding.

The fruit was fresh and the cantaloupe in the salad was sweet and crisp. The lamb was so tender and flavorful it melted off the bone. My daughter ate all her chicken and vegetables; the first time ever.

After going back for desert and another salad, we still walked out paying only $16.40 for three people.

The ambiance is charming, though in need of some attention, but for what it is, Clifton's Cafeteria is a wonderful experience we all can afford to enjoy.
