Huntington Beach, CA

The Bolsa Chica Wetlands are a 300 acre coastal sanctuary for wildlife and migratory birds which makes this Huntington Beach location a bird watcher's paradise. In fact, about half of the bird species found in the United States have been sighted at this very location. (The Bolsa Chica Conservancy offers a nice birder’s guide you may want to take a look at prior to your excursion.)

This rare coastal ecosystem is an enjoyable afternoon walk and environmental lesson for the kids. If you prefer an escort, there are several docent led tours offered by groups such as Amigos de Bolsa Chica and Bolsa Chica Land and Trust. These groups also offer educational classes. (Links are below.)

The area contains a tidal salt marsh which is the breeding ground for several endangered bird species, dunes, and an unvegetated island that provides a nesting habitat for many types of terns.

Once 53,000 acres of wetland, the Bolsa Chica Wetlands have been reduced by development to only 13,000 acres. In fact, California has lost almost 95% of its historical coastal wetlands.

Restoration of the Bolsa Chica Wetlands is presently underway in an effort to preserve and reverse the habitat degradation of the surviving area.

The Bolsa Chica Wetlands are located along the east side of Pacific Coast Highway in the city of Huntington Beach, California from Warner Avenue to Seapoint Avenue. It is open to the public daily from sunrise to sunset.
