Old Town Sacramento | |||||||||||||||
| Old Town Sacramento. The birthplace of California as we know it. Located on the banks of Sacramento River, Old Town Sacramento began as a trading post but hit its stride with the discovery of gold in 1847 by John Marshall. Old Town Sacramento became a prime-trading center for savvy and/or unscrupulous businessmen to outfit and/or swindle the tidal wave of prospectors flocking to the area. The final stop of the famed, though short-lived, pony express route (yes, there is a monument), Old Town Sacramento experienced explosive growth. However, like most major cities, the Old Town Sacramento business center slowly faded and moved out. By the 1950’s the jewel of the delta had become a slum. Redevelopment began in the 1960’s but unlike other projects, this one actually succeeded. Today with dozens of historic Gold Rush-era buildings (faithfully restored or reconstructed), Old Town Sacramento has been named a National Landmark and a portion is designated as a State Historic Park. Businesses are flourishing in what was once an eyesore. Over 5 million people a year are drawn here for its museums, shops and restaurants. Stroll down the cobblestone streets and wooden sidewalks. Duck into one of the many stores that offer everything from souvenirs to sauvignon. Book a river cruise on a paddle wheeler or take a horse and buggy ride. Don't miss the California State Railroad Museum, one of the finest in the country, filled with beautifully restored locomotives and traveling cars. Many of the exhibits are “boardable” allowing one to experience a glimpse into the golden age of railroading. There is a great “hands-on” kids section where they can play. Ever wondered what made a diesel locomotive go? View one cut in half, allowing access to all its inner workings. From April to September you can catch a steam train for 40 minute, 6-mile roundtrip ride along the banks of the Sacramento River. Be sure to stop by the Old Town Sacramento visitor’s center and pick up a self-guided walking tour of all the attractions and historic sites. After your day, stop at one of the numerous kid friendly restaurants available in the area. All tastes are represented. For those going solo there are some great bars with lively musical entertainment.
