Helping Hiccups
How could I know that what began as a simple walk with my daughter would culminate in an answer to a question that has eluded me my entire life… what is the cure for hiccups? Such is the folly of life.

The day started off simple enough, a brisk walk from our house down to the main street of town. Along the way I made some remark that caused my little one to explode in laughter. Further remarks only exaggerated the problem and before long she had a full on attack of the hiccups. Not wanting to postpone our day we continued on our walk, she, hiccupping all the way. It did not get better.

At some point we found ourselves in a small curio shop that seemed to deal in everything. Perfume, crystals, small Japanese mechanized dogs… you get the idea. From behind a beaded entryway emerged an elegantly dressed lady who asked if we needed assistance. I replied we were merely looking, but upon hearing my daughter’s audible dilemma she offered assistance.

She stated her point of origin as Iran and said that she had THE cure for hiccups. Having tried every known “cure” (blow into a paperbag, drink water, eat raw sugar, get scared, etc., etc.,) I was a bit skeptical, however, there was something in her conviction that made me toss caution to the wind and place my daughter under her charge.

The lady began by telling me that this was a cure that was passed down from her mom, who learned it from her mom, who learned it from her mom. With my jaw firmly open she began the procedure. I was amazed. Was this some ancient remedy passed on through tradition? Who knows, but I will tell you it works, and it works fast.

Older kids or adults can try this procedure on their own, however younger kids will need assistance. The pictures will guide you. This procedure though funny to watch actually works and works immediately.

  1. Fill a cup with water.
  2. Have your little’un back into you.
  3. Form an "L" shape with each hand. (see picture)
  1. Using your index fingers and thumbs cover his/her ear and nasal passages.
  2. While you close those passages have the child pick up the glass of water and drink it directly out of the glass or by straw. (see picture)
This procedure, though funny to watch actually works and works immediately. Try it and you will be made a believer. I am forever indebted to that mysterious lady and her quirky curio shop on Honolulu Boulevard.
