Your Local Nursery to the Rescue

Every year we’d venture to a local store that had a garden section to buy our plants, and every year we would take the time to plant them and they would look beautiful for a short time and then die. Then, we would end up going back to the store and replacing them.

Finally, we decided we needed some guidance and chose to go to a real nursery. We heard that the Gardenview Nursery in Arcadia had great prices, so off we went… It was kind of a long drive, but definitely worth it.

The Gardenview Nursery grows all of their plants on the grounds, as opposed to being a greenhouse. This makes a big difference, because this way the plants you buy are already accustom to the LA climate.

The people who work there were all very helpful and not at all pushy. They’re knowledgeable about all of the plants and flowers that they sell (including if they are poisonous or not… which is important if you have kids). They know which plants flower and during what times of the year, which need shade/sun, how much dirt, how deep a hole etc.

Both my 6 year old and my 1 year old enjoyed being there. They both smelled all the flowers and looked at the bees & butterflies. It’s like a botanical garden, including a small, but cute little pond and a mini bridge. My 1 year old loved to walk back and forth over the bridge; she did that about 500 times. They both threw pebbles in the pond and took turns pulling the wheelbarrow, which the store supplies to carry your plants. My 1 year old even laid down in the gravel and pretended to swim in it!

We learned a lot at the nursery and were able to make informed choices for our garden. Discovering which plants work best for our yard's specific requirements has alleviated the guessing game and saved us a lot of wasted time and money that resulted from buying incorrectly. If you're experiencing a high turn over rate with your plants, visiting a nursery with a knowledgeable staff is the way to go... and lots of fun too!
