Transforms a School

One school's dream becomes reality thanks to the generosity of Kirk and Anne Douglas.

Screen legend, Kirk Douglas and his wife, Anne, visited Ivanhoe Elementary in Los Angeles, California to help dedicate the new playground that was built in part from a $25,000 grant given by the Douglas Foundation to the school.

Kirk, himself, even gave the new play equipment a trial run with the kids.

Ivanhoe Elementary and its surrounding community of Silverlake, pulled together to match the Douglas Foundation grant with an additional $25,000 in donations.

Everyone in the neighborhood, from parents, teachers, students, local councilmen and assemblymen to the Silverlake Residents Assoc., Home Depot, and the Silverlake Rotary Club went into action to make this dream come true for the neighborhood children. Even the local firemen at Station 66 came in between calls to plant the grass.

Kirk Douglas, son of poor Russian immigrants and Anne Douglas, who became a U.S. citizen through marriage, both grateful for the opportunities this country has given them, were inspired to start a program to "give something back" to America.

Anne believes, "Giving children a better education, will give children a better life."

To date, 204 schools have benefited from the Douglas Foundation.

In fact, Anne is so enthusiastic about their efforts to aid schools, that she told Kirk to "go get a job" so they could do more. Needless to say, Kirk obliged and added a 98th film to his credit. Kirk newest film, "It Runs in the Family," also stars his son, Michael Douglas.

Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Douglas   The Douglas Foundation has also supported the Los Angeles Mission for the Homeless, which has opened the Anne Douglas Center for Women, the Motion Picture Relief Home's Alzheimer's Unit, which has been named, "Harry's Haven" after Kirk's father, and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Kirk and Anne are truly an inspiration to us all.
