Hiking Sedona

From the magnificent Red Rock formations, to vortexes, to ancient Indian ruins, hiking in Sedona is an incredible way to experience America's Southwest.

Sedona offers hiking for every level of outdoor enthusiast. There are numerous trails and visitor centers located throughout the area. The terrain can be quite rocky and good hiking shoes are a must. Also, be sure to bring plenty of water, the air is extremely dry.

Getting to some of the trails can sometimes be somewhat of an off-road experience, so be sure to check whether the area you will be visiting is 2 wheel drive accessible.

Additionally, parking passes are required just about everywhere and the lack of one will get you a stiff fine, so plan ahead and make sure you have one before you get to your location.

As with any outdoor expedition, be sure to read and abide by the local warning signs. Be aware of your surroundings and keep your children near you. Rattlesnakes are present in the warmer seasons and there are warnings about the hantavirus which is contracted by exposure to rodent feces. Common sense goes a long way...

One of the most enjoyable things about traveling with children, is sharing their excitement about the upcoming adventure, so take a little time to teach them about the area and the the things they're going to see.

Since the "cowboy and Indian" part of this trip was of particular interest to our kids, we secretly purchased some Indian arrowheads and turquoise at a local shop before one of our hikes and hid them along the trail so they could go on a real archaeological hunt! I'm not sure who had more fun with that one... the grown ups or the kids! Needless to say, it was a huge hit all the way around.

(Just a reminder, removing anything including a rock from State or National Parks is a big no no.)

Hiking Sedona   Another fun way to mix in education is to visit a local Nature Center. In addition to being quite informative, many have "Junior Ranger" programs for the kids, so be sure to ask when you go in. Learning about the area and answering a few questions in a workbook will get them a local badge from a real ranger!

For everyone who enjoys the outdoors, Sedona is a must see location. The unique beauty of the area is both majestic and surreal. The sunsets are breathtaking and the night sky magnificent.

One important note: Look out for speed limit signs. They change constantly, so watch very carefully. There are many speed traps on the main road.
