Kid Hikes

The Los Angeles area contains year-around hiking opportunities for kids.

For easy hikes led by a docent leader, the Nature Conservancy in Orange County is a great place to go. Children, of course, are welcome. The docent will talk about the plants, the critters and the birds you encounter while hiking. These hikes can be very easy, 2-3 hours, to moderate. You always need to bring water and sometimes you need a lunch. The hikes are usually early in the morning, to beat the heat. There are several areas available for the docent led hiking tours; Laguna Beach, Limestone Canyon and Blackstar Canyon. Reservations need to be made for the Nature Conservancy docent led hiking at (714) 832-7478 or (949) 494-9352.

Caspers Park in Orange County has a short nature walk, a nature building, a play area, long hikes and a campground. Caspers is located next to the Cleveland National Forest on the Ortega Highway, about ten miles inland from San Juan Capistrano. There is a $4 parking fee at Caspers. In the morning hours you can usually see deer feeding on the vegetation.

Ice House trail is another good one for kids. Ice House trail head is just past the town of Mt. Baldy, on your right. The town of Mt. Baldy is reached by taking Mills Ave. off of highway 66 in Claremont. Mills Ave. turns into Baldy Rd. The trail follows a stream through a very beautiful wooded canyon. The trip is easy for kids and you can bring your leashed dog. An adventure pass is needed for parking, or a 1-day $5 pass. Either can be purchased at the house located at the entrance.
