Parenting... Mommy Days

With busy schedules, sometimes it’s difficult even when you’re spending time with your kids to have 100% of your focus just on them.

I always spend a lot of time with my daughter… taking her to extra curricular activities, volunteering at school, helping with homework, hosting play dates, reading to her every night before going to bed, etc., but often, I'm unintentionally distracted during the time I’m spending with her.

Most of the time my distractions are work related. I work from home so I can always be there for my daughter, but unlike having a job that you can leave at the office, I have no end to my workday or workweek, so it’s difficult to stop thinking about things I need to do and give her my complete attention.

In order to remedy the situation, my daughter and I came up with “Mommy Days.”

On Mommy Days, I’m not allowed to answer the phone or work on the computer. (We usually choose to do something out of the house to insure that.)

Sometimes, it will be a big Mommy Day. She and I will go to an amusement park or on some other all day adventure. Other times, it will be a picnic at a park, the zoo, or a museum. It doesn’t really matter where or how long, only that the time spent is quality and focused 100% on my daughter.

We’ve been doing this since she was 4. Now that she’s 7, she’s able to tell me when she thinks we need a Mommy Day. Most of the time this occurs when I’m most busy. It’s her way of teaching me to stop what I’m doing and take a little time for what’s really important…her!

All of the best relationships are nurtured. The people who are dearest to you need to be shown how much you really value them, and there's no better way than giving of yourself.

Teaching your child to tend to relationships and not take them for granted, are life lessons they'll carry with them to adulthood.

There is no greater gift and no memories more special than time spent with your child. Mommy Days are just another way of showing your child how much they mean to you.
