Child Safety Tips...
Deputy Green teaches kids and
their parents how to stay safe.

Deputy Green, from the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department in Marina Del Rey, visited the Magda Martial Arts Institute in Reseda, California to share child safety tips with the students and their parents.

Deputy Green is a ten year law enforcement veteran and prior to that served with the Marine Corp. in Desert Storm.

Child Safety Tips:

1. Make sure you teach your child what a stranger is.

Make sure your child understands that a stranger is anyone your child doesn't know. Make sure they understand that strangers come in many different shapes and sizes. Only the parent or guardian can determine whether or not someone is not a stranger.

  • Take nothing from strangers.
  • Never talk to strangers.
  • Never take rides from strangers.
  • Never give your name or address to a stranger.
  • Never volunteer information on the phone.
  • Never open the door.

Grown ups don't ask kids for directions or help. This is a trick to abduct children. Teach your child to run away if they are approached by a grown up asking for help of any kind.

2. Be sure your child knows how to dial 9-1-1.

3. Make sure your child knows their phone number and area code.

4. Establish a family password, and make sure your child asks anyone picking them up to use it before leaving with them.

5. Teach your child to not keep secrets and always tell their parents, especially if it's another adult asking them to keep the secret.

6. Don't let your child wear clothes with their name on it.

7. Establish emergency back up plans in the event of any emergency: pick-up, fire, domestic violence. Communicate so they know their options.

8. If a child is old enough to ride a bus, teach them to always sit in the front.

6. Don't drive the same way home on a daily basis.

7. Always lock car doors and roll up windows.

8. Avoid alleys.

9. When driving, look around when you come to a stop and leave room in front of your vehicle as an avenue of escape. (The #1 and #3 lanes are preferred.)

10. If you experience car trouble:

  • Stay in your vehicle.
  • If someone comes to assist, just ask them to call for assistance.
  • In the event of an accident, assess the situation before exiting your vehicle.

11. Don't wear flashy jewelry.

12. If you have a stone, such as a diamond on your ring, turn it to the inside of your hand.

13. On answering machines, don't say "I'm", say "we're". Don't say, "not home", say "not available".

14. If you see someone "shady" coming towards you, make direct eye contact, but don't stare them down.

15. If you think someone's following you, stop and turn around… pretend to tie your shoe or any other action that will enable a look behind you.

16. Always pay attention to your instincts. If something doesn't feel right... listen to yourself and don't dismiss it.

(The above child safety tips should be reviewed periodically with your children.)
