Travel... Taking the Kids to the Bahamas
Back

Kids on the beach, Bahamas   The island of Nassau in the Bahamas is a wonderful place to take kids of any age. The natural beauty of the tropical island is enough to make you want to spend every day at the beach, but there's a lot more there to do.

Getting around is easy, but be aware if renting a car that they do drive on the opposite side of the road. If driving on the opposite side of road is not for you, "no worries, mon," there are buses everywhere that come by frequently and the drivers will even take you right to your condo or hotel if its on the main street, which most are anyway. There are also plenty of cabs if you prefer.

Crystal Cay is an aquarium park that includes tide pool, shark, ray exhibits and more. It's a very low key and relaxing place to visit. The highlight is an underwater observatory tank built in the actual ocean where you can get a real view of what's under the sea.

The Pirates of Nassau is a fun museum to visit. The exhibits look very much like Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Some parts of the museum are dark and a bit scary for the little ones, so gauge your child accordingly before taking them in.

Ardastra Gardens is a "don't miss" attraction and one we enjoyed visiting more than once. It's billed as the home of the world famous marching flamingos. What? You've never heard of the world famous marching flamingos? (They actually do march with a trainer in one of the shows, by the way.)

The grounds are beautiful and located right in the middle of the jungle. In addition to the many zoo exhibits, there are several animals like peacocks, flamingos, and other exotic birds that roam free.

It's a great learning experience to interact so closely with nature.

Carriage Tour, Bahamas   Touring the island by carriage is another fun way to spend an afternoon. The tours let you take a leisurely look at many of the island landmarks that would have easily been missed when just driving by in a car.

Your guide will tell you about the island, it's points of interest, and its history as you go, so it's quite informative for the grown ups.

Mostly, the kids just enjoy the horses and the ride.

Located a hop, skip, and a two island jump from Nassau is Blue Lagoon Island, where you can experience the Dolphin Encounter... my personal favorite. Jumping in and swimming with the dolphins is definitely a fulfillment of a childhood fantasy.

Prior to going in, you're given a lecture about the marine mammals and a lesson about how to interact with them. This is an all day attraction, but if you're up to it on the way back, you will be stopping near the Atlantis resort so you can spend some extra time or have dinner before returning to Nassau.

Wildlife, Bahamas   The local food of interest is conch (pronounced "conk"). It's served anyway you can possibly think of and I do mean any way...

It's actually pretty good. Conch fritters and conch salad were my favorites and are definitely worth trying at least once. The only big thumbs down for me was the grilled conch. It was chewy and in my opinion, a bit on the "wished I hadn't ordered that one" side. The island drink of my choice was Junkanoo Punch, a sweet tropical soda.

For good souvenir shopping, stick to the locals instead of the touristy shops. There are many stands and swap meet type set ups where you can get the same stuff at much better prices.

Speaking of price, the locals do expect you to barter with them, so make sure offer something less than the asking price. (It helps to take a bit of time to shop around so you're familiar with the prices before you make you actually make your purchases.)
